Southampton is a large modern city about 12 miles from Winchester and can be reached by rail or road, the latter being dual carriageway. The road can be congested at certain times and so planning is taking place to bring the road up to motorway standards, M3. The city centre has all the normal chain stores and shops plus many specialist shops on the fringe of the actual centre. Large modern hospitals have been built, there is a university, limited theatres and a most successful football club.

The New Forest

The New Forest is not far from Winchester, just three-quarters of an hour by car. The New Forest was previously Royal hunting land and has been preserved throughout the centuries as a largely wild and uncultivated area. This is probably due to the poor quality of the soil and poor drainage. The New Forest provides a superb area for walks, picnics, riding and other outdoor activities.
