Foreword by Lieutenant Colonel Doug Mackay RA, Garrison Commander

I am delighted to welcome you to Edinburgh Garrison. Edinburgh has a long, historic association with the military and is a vibrant and exciting city with much to offer everyone. I very much hope you and your family will enjoy your time here.

Edinburgh Garrison is home to two regular infantry battalions, over 30 reserve units and various other defence organisations. The Garrison Headquarters is based in Edinburgh Castle, which is also home to a number of smaller military units, an Officers' Study Centre and accommodation for personnel working in and visiting the Garrison area. The Castle is well worth a visit and includes two excellent regimental museums alongside the National War Museum and the Scottish National War Memorial.

We are part of 51st Infantry Brigade and the Garrison HQ's primary role is to support the Armed Forces community in both the Edinburgh City and Midlothian local authority areas. This includes working in partnership with the local authorities and other organisations to ensure that they meet their obligations under the Armed Forces Covenant, especially in the areas of health, housing, employment and education. We are fortunate that the local authorities in Edinburgh and Midlothian are very supportive of the wider military community and are committed to working to prevent Service Personnel and their families being disadvantaged as a result of our service. We also work closely with a number of other partners, including the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Jobcentre Plus and NHS Lothian, to help identify and resolve issues that can confront Service families.

This Guide is designed to introduce you to Edinburgh and the surrounding area, and I hope you find it helpful: it offers advice on some of the facilities in the region and provides useful sources of information.

Maintaining a strong Service community is very important to me, as is the welfare of every Service family: I am committed to ensuring that you and your family feel included and supported. Please get involved, make use of the welfare facilities, and don't hesitate to let me know what else we can do to help. We are always keen to hear your suggestions and feedback: if you have any comments or ideas for how we can improve this guide, please email the Garrison HQ at: EdinburghGar-GroupMailbox@mod.gov.uk
