Foreword by Lieutenant Colonel S J Caldwell, Commander Colchester Garrison

I extend a very warm welcome on behalf of my team at HQ Colchester Garrison. They and your unit staff will work hard to help you get the most out of your assignment. Both locations are well established with very close relationships between the military and the local communities.

The Armed Forces Covenant continues to provide an opportunity for those relationships to strengthen and mature. We welcome and appreciate the local community support that we are offered and it is vital that we, in the military community, make every effort to engage with our local civilian communities as together we are stronger.

Woodbridge Station will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the formation of 23 Para Engr Regt in late July 2018. In 2019 Colchester will focus on the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D Day and Arnhem – both key events for the forerunners of the Air Assault Bde. The Air Assault Brigade and Colchester Garrison Show will next occur in Summer 2019 but before then there will be a myriad of smaller events. Furthermore, and on an individual and family basis, whether you are part of 16 Air Assault Brigade or another unit and whether you live in Colchester or at Woodbridge, I would encourage you to participate in local events and activities as much as you can – there is plenty to see and do in East Anglia.

I also encourage you to participate in the various garrison and unit activities that are specifically designed to support you; coffee mornings, the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, the Military Wives Choir, community briefings and other events that are regularly organised by Welfare staff. The Community Centres in both Colchester and Woodbridge are great venues for you to engage with others and to find out about the wide range of support that is available. This Guide also has a wealth of information and I commend it to you.

I hope that you enjoy your time in this part of East Anglia and do not hesitate to get in touch with Garrison or Unit Staff if you need advice or support.
