Maths & English
18 AEC offers Functional Skills (FS) courses in English and Maths. These are available at level 2 as almost all soldiers should have achieved level 1 on an Army Apprenticeship.
Assessment for English and Maths Skills can be booked with the Functional Skills Clerk and take place on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, most weeks, every month. Assessments help to identify the skills already acquired and the skills that need improvement. Where skills need improvement, soldiers can enrol on a Programme of learning, often internet-based, to work in their own time, at their own pace to prepare for a tutor-led course and then exam. The Basic Skills Development Manager (BSDM), will assess when soldiers are ready for a course and will help them (and their units) bid for places.
Other support is available for soldiers who have, or may have, a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as dyslexia, and for soldiers for whom English is a Second Language.
