Chicksands Station, Chicksands
Chicksands Station, Chicksands

Foreword by Gp Capt Stu Stirrat, Commander

Welcome to JFC Chicksands. Our establishment is one of the most scenic and historically interesting military bases in the UK and boasts wide expanses of parkland together with its own river centred around a magnificent 12th Century Gilbertine Priory. Chicksands has been associated with the armed forces since the 1930s, playing host to British and then American units, before assuming its present identity in 1996. Today, JFC Chicksands is home to the Joint Intelligence Training Group, the Headquarters of the Intelligence Corps, several operational units and elements of the Reserve Forces. This makes it a vibrant place to live and work, and one that also makes an important contribution to the Defence of the UK.

The primary role of Chicksands is training for Defence as a whole and as such, it draws students and staff from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Civil Service together with a small number of foreign exchange personnel. Our courses range from dedicated career courses, which can last up to 18 months, through to short specialist courses that may last only a matter of days. This mix of courses creates a dynamic working environment, one in which we aim to foster and develop the potential of everyone serving at Chicksands. We are delighted that in October 2016OFSTED graded JITG OUTSTANDING in its welfare and duty of care of our trainees.

I am confident that you will enjoy living at Chicksands, and that you will find both the location and the local community welcoming and fulfilling. The base has evolved to provide a range of services to cater for most requirements: we have an education centre, a well-stocked learning resource centre, gymnasium, cinema, medical centre, Premier shop, laundry facilities, and for Phase 2 trainees, the Abeona Centre. The Gilbertine Centre houses St Gilbert of Sempringham Church and the establishment Welfare organisation, Community Development Worker, and the popular Rustics café.

Central Bedfordshire is a great area to live and work, with good employment opportunities for partners and dependants. The schools within the immediate area are very good, the local community is welcoming and there are good transport links to the national rail and motorway networks. For those wishing to venture further afield, Chicksands is well placed for Luton, Stansted and Heathrow airports

All in all, our picturesque base has a remarkable history and an exciting mission, of which you are now part. I look forward to meeting you, and hope that you have a most successful and enjoyable tour
