General

The following sports and recreational activities are available to all ranks stationed at the Armour Centre:

Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beagling, Birdwatching, Boxing, Canoeing, Cricket, Fencing, Fishing, Football, Gliding, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Orienteering, Riding, Rock Climbing, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Small- Bore Shooting, Squash, Sub-Aqua, Tennis, Waterborne Sports.

Purbeck Sports Centre, Wareham

Situated in Wareham, approximately 8 miles from Bovington and 7.5 miles from Lulworth, is Purbeck Sports Centre.

The facilities the Centre offers covers a wide range of activities and interests. The 25 metre swimming pool (heated to 89°f) provides a huge selection of activities itself – general public, adult only, parent and toddler, over 60, aqua-natal, aqua fit, swimming lessons (for both adults and children) lane swimming and club swimming sessions.

Every afternoon at weekends and during the school holidays the Centre has a junior fun session, which includes our large inflatable aqua-run, large floats, toys and other equipment. Our course programme is extensive, catering for adults and children of all abilities. In particular, our cardio classes operate both during the day and in the evening (the daytime sessions are run in conjunction with a crèche).

For sports and general exercise we can offer our multi-purpose sports hall which caters for badminton, hockey, netball, volleyball and 5-a-side football. In addition we have three squash courts, a modern fitness suite and activity room holding cardio and exercise classes, dance and martial arts.

Outside the Centre boasts three floodlit artificial grass and four tarmac tennis courts, and also a floodlit full-size artificial grass football pitch.

The Centre is used regularly for children’s parties – choose from the bouncy castle, 5-a-side football, trampolining, swimming or the Playzone (a ‘soft’ play area); hot or cold food is also available.

Our non-sporting facilities may also be of interest. The Centre offers an up-to-date solarium; there is a physiotherapy clinic and massage/reflexology sessions. We also have a ‘state of the art’ sound wave relaxation chair, designed to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, relieve headaches, migraines and backache.

Harry’s Sports Bar and Café forms part of the Centre’s facilities and features a large screen TV, showing all them major sporting events. Harry’s also offers a conservatory and sun terrace overlooking Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Hills.

Stanley Barracks-Physical Recreational

Training Centre (PRTC)

The PRTC at Stanley Barracks, Bovington, is a great facility to train and play sport. The Gymnasium comprises 2 large marked floor sports halls, strength & conditioning area, rehabilitation suite, weights room, squash courts, 25 m swimming pool and obstacle course. Lunchtime classes including x-biking and circuits, are available to all gym members, are run between 1230-1330 hrs Mon-Thurs.

The PRTC is a very busy establishment and caters for a wide variety of personnel including Phase 2 Soldiers Under Training, Command Courses, Permanent Staff, Contractors, dependents, and schools. We also have a number of clubs which run out of the gymnasium including Bovington Sub-Aqua Club, Wareham Swimming Club, Bovington Canoe Club and Ladies Circuit Training. Membership of the gymnasium for serving military personnel, dependents and civil servants is free and for contractors is £40 a year. Please contact the gymnasium for any further information. Armour Centre Saddle Club

The Armour Centre Saddle Club exists for the benefit of all members of the Armour Centre, their wives and children. Its facilities are also extended to students attending courses at the Armour Centre. The stables are located in Allenby Barracks and have 40 loose boxes and 15 pony stalls. There is an excellent indoor riding school and also 2 x outdoor menage.

Livery charges are kept to a minimum but are dependent on the current cost of forage. The stables has a number of horses and ponies for hire at very competitive rates. Riders can hack supervised or or can have riding lessons from BHS qualified staff at very reasonable rates in the Indoor and Outdoor School, or in the British Eventing Cross Country area. There is also a thriving Pony Club section for all ages, culminating in a Pony Club Camp in the Summer. The South Dorset Hunt offers members of the Armour Centre excellent hunting at reduced rates. Dorset Golf & Country Club

Our Golf Courses – the Lakeland, Parkland and Woodland Courses, designed by Martin Hawtree offer Championship Golf for all abilities. All of our Courses have been built to the highest standards and boast USGA specification greens and tees. We have hosted many Championship Events including the South West PGA and the Mastercard Tour Event.

2006 saw the Dorset Golf & Country Club host the National Army Infantry Golf Championships in April. The event was a huge success with over 120 players competing over the two-day event. Our new and unique air conditioned Clubhouse, recently extended to cover 250 guests, offers mouth-watering snacks and delicious full meals throughout the day, combined with the comfort of the Clubhouse or the patio looking onto the Purbeck Hills, it is a fantastic venue to dine.

Bovington Garrison Shoot and Fishing

Bovington Garrison has a well established pheasant shoot which meets every Saturday during the shooting season. Although well supported there are occasions where there may be spaces for guests from the Military community to take a days shooting at extremely reasonable prices. The Memorial Hall

The Memorial Hall on King George V Road is the Centre for the local community and is available for booking for functions/parties etc. For further information contact the Garrison Staff Office on 01929 403962 (Mil Ext 3962)

Bovington Kitchen Gardens

These recently established kitchen gardens (allotment) vegetable plots, each measures 10 metres by 10 metres and so far, 19 plots have been established on a redundant soccer field on Holt Road in Bovington Camp, which is adjacent to Bovington First School. Growing your own vegetables is a most entertaining and worthwhile hobby. The site is about to expand further with up to another 15 plots and already has a growing waiting list due to popularity and high demand.

Any member of the wider Bovington Camp Community (be that Uniformed personnel, Civil Service, Defence Contractor or House owner/ tenant) is welcome to apply and join this most thriving healthy and social activity.
