Introduction to West Moors

By SPP Reporter

West Moors Station

West Moors Station houses the Defence Fuels Group, the Petroleum Depot and the Defence Petroleum School. The Station occupies approximately 460 acres of land on the outskirts of the Dorset village of West Moors, which is situated close to the A31 road, some eight miles north of Bournemouth.

Civilian Amenities

The facilities for shopping in the village are adequate for most needs. Butcher, baker, fruit and vegetables, chemist, general store, pet shop, hairdressers, fish and chips, laundrette, drycleaners, bookmakers, Co-op and Tesco Express, which are open all hours. The larger out of town supermarkets can be found in Ferndown about one and a half miles away. Ferndown is the nearest town to West Moors and fulfills all requirements.

There is no cinema in West Moors but both Bournemouth and Poole have large entertainment parks with multi-screen facilities as well as many other leisure outlets. Closer to home Wimborne and Ferndown have small provincial theatres.

The village has two pubs one of which offers very good child facilities. There is also a small social club, which welcomes military families. The nearest Royal British Legion social club is in Ferndown.

There are very good technical colleges in both Bournemouth and Poole but more local venues are used within the adult education / night school curriculum, again Poole and Bournemouth have excellent sports facilities but both Ringwood and Ferndown have in their own right, adequate sports centres.

Adjacent to the quarters in Bond Avenue is a large sports field used for soccer and cricket plus a large safe play area for children. There is a designated footpath running alongside the park, which is an excellent space to exercise dogs or just enjoy the Dorset countryside.
